Anatomy of Cockroach

 

                The title of the poem “Cockroach” by Charles Bukowski indicates a creepy crawler by a human point of view. Humans do not want the existence of cockroach in this world but this creature has the right to live here the same as humans do. The speaker in this poem is first person and male. The reason for guessing male is when any male addresses other anonymous gender then usually refers as (He, Him) a male and the speaker addresses the cockroach as a male. The speaker talks about Hollywood and Western Street which is a symbol of youth and that’s how we know he is young to middle aged.

                The speaker is a dominating character who does not want anyone around him who is not on the same level or class as him. He does not care if any poor people are dying around him; in fact, he gets pleasure by killing weak innocent creatures as we see in those lines:

I got the can and sprayed

and sprayed and sprayed

and finally the roach came out

and gave me a very dirty look.

then he fell down into

the bathtub and I watched

him dying

with a subtle pleasure.

In the poem the poet addresses the poor in general. He is rich and he does not want someone in his neighborhood or around him who is poor. “Cockroach” is a symbolic poem and it describes how the powerless are treated in this world by powerful rich men. It should not be like this. They are the creatures of the same creator and should be treated the same as others. Regarding how one may respond to the speaker negatively because the speaker is a dominating person, and the world does not like dominating person.

                The poem “Cockroach” is situated in a bathroom “while I was pissing and as/ I picked him up with some greenblue toilet/ paper and flushed him.”(3, 17-19) which is symbol of the whole world. In the world comparative weaker people get pounded by the powerful rich people. In this poem, the timeframe is recent because the green blue toilet paper was invented in the nineteenth century. But the symbolic poem’s timeframe is infinite. It is a continuous process from ancient time to now. But people are much more aware now than before, they want change and to stop the powerful from dominating the weak. The most recent situation in the history was slavery in the United States. Many countries in the world became aware of slavery and began to protest against it. The tone of the poem is the same throughout the whole body. The theme of the poem is the better traditional truth; the relationship between powerful and powerless. Very few lucky fellows get power, and we see everywhere in this would that powerful people do not always care for the poor because they do not want to see their sorrow. But they have enough time to see powerless dying as mentioned in the poem: “I watched/ him dying/ with a subtle pleasure” (12-14). The rich have no time to think about how the powerless poor feel when getting dominated. The cockroach is a symbol of the poor who get dominated and abused for not paying the rent! The cockroach has no voice to speak and that’s why they cannot protest. This poem suggests an unfair society.

                After reading this poem I personally liked it. Over the centuries this has been a true image of the society. When I started reading this it was funny to read, but when I got the meaning it was very painful; I can feel this poem. The way the poem is written is very nice, it got my attention from the first line “the cockroach crouched/against the tile” (1-2) and I enjoyed the way it becomes a symbol of rude reality and the silent scream of the powerless.

Email service providers advantage and disadvantages

Over the centuries the method of communication has varied from sending mails (letters) by horse carriage and/or a person delivering it, to now communicating through the internet as email. There are many email carriers that enable us to send such mails towards one another so just think how would it be without email? Email helps people with communication since it’s a faster way and more convenient form in reaching someone. Furthermore, after you register and/or sign up for an email account you would have an email id (a cyber-address). There are many choices when you go to open an email id. When you want to have the best email id you have to compare them. Basically the most commonly used email service providers are Gmail and Yahoo mail, most of the email users use email accounts from those two service providers. We can have both ids if we want but if we compare and go for the best one then it will help to keep life easier.

To begin, an email I.D is the name you give yourself before the “at the rate of” symbol which is, (“@”), and before the name of the company (server); for example, abcdef12@gmail.com. When you begin to make an email I.D it can become difficult since you have a percentage of choices you can do with making your name (email I.D). You may want to write acde12@gmail.com but if someone else has it, it will suggest you others that you may possibly pick from (both Yahoo and Gmail does this). The main component of an email I.D is storing your mails. For example, I like to keep my important mails, so that in the future if I need any information from them I can get it.

How about the storage? Who has the higher storage capability between Gmail and Yahoo? Well, Gmail provides more than 7gigabyte space (Ginfo) to a user which is mostly unlimited, and Yahoo provides literally unlimited space.

Gmail is powered by Google and Yahoo mail is powered by Yahoo. They both are well reputed companies in the information technology sector. They both have separate instant messaging (IM) software. Name of the IM of Google is GTalk and Yahoo is Yahoo Messenger. But Gmail has built-in chatting function in the email. For example, you could chat with any of your contacts when you open email id.

Gmail has a conversational method (which allows you to see in a drop-down form who sent who, in order and with the time it was sent), while yahoo doesn’t have this feature. The conversation method allows every reply to become “tail” to the previous reply as well as having every email is individual there. What I mean by “tail” when Gmail groups all replies with their original message, creating a single conversation or thread.

There are some common problems of using email, such as spam mails and security issues. Gmail has a stronger spam protection system. Probability of getting a spam mail in Gmail account is nearly about 1% while Yahoo doesn’t have such strong spam protector. Yahoo gets about 30-40 spam mails a day. Furthermore, because they are leading information technology companies, they fix almost every small or big security issues, to keep their good reputation.

If I want to grade the mail searching option in Yahoo and Gmail then Yahoo mail will get “B+” from me, in the meanwhile Gmail will get an “A”. The mail searching is faster in Gmail than Yahoo.

The folder organization of Yahoo is better than Gmail; because it lets you setup folder system and organize in your own way, which is kind of difficult in Gmail. Gmail has some already created folders you can transfer your email there but cannot create new folders conveniently.

Continuous changing information technology and the participation of big part of the society gives us better and convenient access to the world. The World became very small with this information technology. Now-a-days I cannot think of myself without an email. An email gives me identity and lets me join in the faster and convenient world. Yahoo and Gmail are the two most commonly used emails, but when I look for some better choice of email provider, there could be some confusion. But if I think about what I want from my email, then I might need to consider what the providers offer and what facilities they have.

There could be different kinds of entity classes stored in Wikipedia’s database like webpage, search term, keywords, resource, and the name of the poster or editor.

Wikipedia is all about information, and for that information database technology is so important. Without information technology system Wikipedia will be nothing because, that’s all about database and information. People visit Wikipedia for the information and if the database system does not retrieve information then visiting Wikipedia will be worthless.

Physical view is how users see the website or any database and logical view is how those programs or websites works. Usually, physical and logical view works for different users and their perceptions. Query is the example is Logical view. Logical view is a link with query, and different users get their data differently.

 Determine an entry in Wikipedia is an example of transactional information or analytical information. 

Analytical information mines data and analyzes that. So I think Wikipedia is an example of analytical information, where we get the database with research and result.

If the information contained in Wikipedia database is low quality then everyone who uses the Wikipedia will get harmed. Because, information is valuable but misinformation is dangerous. According to my professor of IT “Misinformation is better than no information”. The big portion of total population is using Wikipedia every day for every kind of information. If the quality of the information is low quality then they will be either misguided which is unethical or will find alternatives. 

Five common characteristics of a high quality information are Accuracy, Completeness, Consistency, Uniqueness and timeliness.  

The Biggest Fall

          Recession! Recession!! Recession everywhere!!! The reason why we are here in a very unfortunate moment is our greatest economic fall of 2008. That event has not only affected us, but also the whole world. Millions of people have lost their jobs and houses have been foreclosed. That crisis was created by the government’s failure to regulate some investment banks like Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and other firms, who didn’t care about the economy. They just cared about their profit. But those actions have affected all of us. In my point of view, the economic crisis was caused by the capitalist system. Capitalism is where the productions are owned and operated for profit.

The first and most important cause of the crisis is lack of government interference, and this is the worse part of a capitalist economy. On Sep 15^th 2008, Lehman Brothers (U.S investment bank) went bankrupt and there was also collapse of the world’s largest insurance company A.I.G. (Sorkin, Business). This event triggered the global financial crisis. It was caused by a poorly regulated financial Industry. After the great depression, President F.D.R implemented some recovery plans and the American Economy grew without any major financial crisis. The financial industries were tightly regulated. Most regular banks were local businesses. Investment banks were small partnerships. Since the 1980’s, the U.S economy has had several financial crises because the investment banks and other industries participated in the stock market and there were lack of government monitoring. In 1981 President Ronald Regan chose Merrill Lynch C.E.O Donald Regan as Treasury Secretary (Wikipedia). And some of his decisions such as the deregulation of savings and loan companies totally failed and cost taxpayers $124billion and cost many people their life savings. Furthermore the continuous deregulation cost $5 trillion dollars on the next decade. Former Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer said “In the absence of meaningful federal action given the clear failure of self-regulation; it has become necessary for others to step in and adopt the protections needed.”(Interview with Charles Ferguson: Inside Job Documentary).  Since deregulation, the biggest financial firms like J.P Morgan, Credit Suisse and Citibank have been accused of defrauding customers, laundering money and committing other crimes several times.

           There was no government supervision to prevent the mismanagement of the financial sector. Regarding the real estate industry, in the old system when a home owner paid their mortgage every month, the money directly went to their local lender. Because this is a long time matter, lenders were careful about that. During deregulation a new system developed. Mortgage lenders sold the mortgages to investment banks and the investment banks combined their thousands of other loans like car loans, student loans etc. to create COLLATERALIZED DEBT OBLIGATIONS or C.D.O’s and sold the C.D.O’s to investors. Now the homeowners paid their mortgages, and the money went to the investors all over the world. In this system lenders were making money so it didn’t matter to them if the home owner could repay or not. The mortgage lenders started making risky loans and investment banks didn’t care because if they could sell more C.D.O’s, they could increase their profit. In that system anyone could get a home loan. As a result the sale and price of the houses skyrocketed. During the financial rise, Wall Street were alerted from International Monitoring Fund (IMF) and some international leaders. But they didn’t care about that and they knew this crisis was going to happen. Subprime loans became ticking time bombs, and finally the market crashed and caused the biggest fall in history.

          Political appointment of Business heads is one of the reasons for this economic fall. President Ronald Regan chose Donald Regan (C.E.O Merrill Lynch) as finance secretary then we saw a rise and fall of Wall Street. President G.W Bush chose Henry Paulson (C.E.O Goldman Sachs) and we have seen the biggest fall ever. The reason they were chosen as finance secretaries might be because of party fund raising during election, but the decision of rewarding them with this vital post of the country was a totally wrong decision, because they came from Wall Street and were lenient to those whom they supposed to regulate.

In a capitalist system we see that, government does not interfere in most of the individual or business decisions. I think government needs to monitor at least some of the management and solve these kinds of financial problems as soon as they start. That’s how they could have prevented the biggest fall in American history; because financial industries would not have been able to sacrifice the public good for more profit.

How Steve Jobs grew his Apple tree

Apple's business success came from innovation, marketing and special initiatives to their sales and marketing force. They used information technology (IT) sector as their weapon. They had attractive ads and lots of internet publicity and tried to reach to everyone. Furthermore, Steve Jobs had that managerial power to use the right person in the right place at the right time. They knew the demand of the time and what people wanted form them. Every creative idea is appreciated in everywhere, and that’s the way Apple is a big apple now. They has desktop (Macintosh), laptop (macbook), iPhone, iPad (Tablet pc), and several kinds of iPods (music player) and everywhere has a great footprint of using new technology. There are might be thousands of similar products in the market but why do we buy Apple? When I bought my first Apple iPhone I saw in the ad that, if you move your iPhone the little ball on the screen moves on iPhones moving path. That was the first touchscreen phone what got such media coverage.


An Apple store employee is required to use all the product information like, how long the product is available, how many available for the customers, how the marketing department dealt with the market about the product, new features of the new product etc. to know how many the need or they need to product information to answer the customers. Apple executives use the information, about the demand and the supply chain, if every sector of the company is working in a proper way or not.
 

The type of information that has a negative impact on apple's operations is: they are very conservative about in company information distribution. Sales department does not share information with purchase department, they only shares the certain information what sales or purchase department cannot go without. That might be their company policy but it is kind of harmful if they don’t share the marking department the proper information.
